What is Archetypal Acting
Where it Originated from- A Brief Synopsis
In 1933, Carl Jung developed the theory of the Four Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious. He believed that inborn within all of us, there only are four ways in which we, universally, present ourselves to society: the Persona, the Shadow, the Animas/Animus, & the Self. He also believed that the Collective Unconscious of our species could be proved by the universal way in which we tell stories, and argued that the Four Archetypes could be found in every piece of art, literature, and religion around the world.
Then in the 1990’s, Caroline Myss adapted Jung’s theory for modern audiences as a tool for self-discovery and empowerment. She expanded and diversified the list of archetypes to better encapsulate the contemporary experience, and still exercises this methodology when coaching clients to this day. She believes that when we investigate the roles we play in our own lives, we gain a deeper understanding of our place in society, and ultimately, the world at large.
We here at Coppola2 Studio have built upon what both Jung and Myss have brought to the table and adapted the concept for a third time to use within the entertainment industry. As storytellers and as artists, we believe that all stories can be broken down into archetypal characters, and by utilizing that theory as a branding technique, we help you discover not only the roles in Hollywood best suited to your unique talents, but also how to market yourself accordingly.
What are Archetypes & How Do I Use Them?
This process is what our school teaches in-depth, but in layman’s terms, think about the different kinds of people you are over the course of a day. At home, a father. At work, a boss. On your own time, a musician. You’re still just one person, but look at how many different roles you can play.
At Coppola2 Studio, we teach actors how to pinpoint specific character traits within yourself and to identify what it is that makes each part of your personas unique. Then through a process of self-discovery, we help you to develop these authentic parts of your personality into the archetypes we see in the media, so that when you are called to act in a role, you will be able to present yourself through that lens genuinely.
